Where To Buy Nitrate Free Bacon !!LINK!!

The dangers of processed meats like bacon come from added nitrates found in very high concentrations. Nitrates, as an additive and preservative, provide a lot of utility because they preserve vibrant colors in many processed meats and extend the expiration date of foods. They can, however, also introduce some health risks.

Much of the spike took place in October 2015 when the World Health Organization declared bacon (and other cured meats) a carcinogen because of the ingredient sodium nitrate. Naturally some consumers are concerned about the purported health effects of sodium nitrite in bacon and have been looking for alternatives to traditionally cured meats.

Nitrate free bacon typically means bacon that is free from sodium nitrate. Likewise nitrite free bacon means that bacon which is free from sodium nitrite. Only one of these is used to help preserve meat.

Companies that make bacon are required to undergo routine food safety checks to ensure that they are using no more than the allowed amounts of sodium nitrite (and certainly no nitrates) along with vitamin C to ensure the safety and health of all consumers of their products.

We have been able to source a truly nitrite free bacon that does not use celery powder as a substitute, and is just as tasty and technically cured as regular bacon or even the other nitrite free bacon brands.

Sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite are common additives used to preserve meat. Sodium nitrate is sold as a salt for curing meats like bacon and jerky, but you can also find naturally occurring in vegetables like celery. Sodium nitrite is also sold as a salt, and acts as an antioxidant that prevents cured meats from browning. Nitrates and nitrites give processed meats their iconic pink color and sharp flavor while preventing harmful bacterial growth during the curing process.

Applegate is a brand that prides itself on natural and organic meats, with 100 percent vegetarian diets for their animals and humane farming methods. This bacon contains no fillers, no GMO ingredients, and no chemical nitrates or nitrites. Remember, celery powder is still naturally high in nitrates. The low calories for a two-slice serving is a major plus if you like plenty of slices for breakfast, but mind the 310 milligrams of sodium.

Smithfield is the largest pork producer in the world (now owned by a Chinese company) so it's no surprise they have a wide variety of bacon products available. This pick doesn't contain added nitrates or nitrites, but does use celery juice which naturally contains the same compound. You'll find turbinado sugar and sea salt on the ingredient list, which may sound fancier but it's still just sugar and salt. At 100 milligrams of sodium and only 80 calories per serving, this is one of the better nutritional picks of the bunch. Smithfield's current practices may not align with your personal philosophies, but they do claim to be working toward certain sustainability goals outlined in a 2018 sustainability statement.

This bacon is made without nitrates or nitrites added save for those found "naturally occurring in sea salt and celery powder," per the copy on the package itself. You can also count on the meat to be free of GMO ingredients, antibiotics, and hormones. And it's quite well-rated by customers.

Again, no added nitrates or nitrites here, and indeed you'll find little else in the ingredients other than turkey meat and water, the bacon contains "2% or less of" sugar, salt, "Natural Flavorings," vinegar, sodium phosphates (that's just more salt, FYI), cherry powder, and cultured celery powder. And overall, this turkey bacon has about two-thirds less fat than traditional bacon.

Since nitrate-free bacon is cured with non-synthetic curing agents, it lends peace of mind to those following the Whole30 or Paleo diets, or those simply looking to cut back on additives and preservatives. But is it deserved?

Nitrate-free bacon still contains nitrates, just from non-synthetic sources like celery or sea salt. There is no scientific evidence that naturally occurring nitrates are any less likely to convert into cancer-causing nitrosamines in the body than sodium nitrate. This means nitrate-free bacon may not be any healthier than regular bacon. More research is needed. Until then, limit processed meats like bacon in your diet.

From the same folks who bring us our classic house Applewood Smoked Bacon comes a bacon that's cured with nitrate from celery juice, not sodium nitrate. Not to get too technical on you, but using a vegetable-based nitrate means the USDA lets them call it "nitrate free." Don't ask me why.

When your bacon arrives, you can store it in the refrigerator or the freezer. Once the bacon is opened, it will be good in the fridge for about a week. Everyone knows the best way to cook bacon is to bake it in the oven, right? Right? You can make a bunch at once to freeze which makes for amazing meal prep. But if you just need a few pieces cooked quickly, check out this Air Fryer Bacon.

Tempted by the wafting smell of gently sizzling bacon but tired of the watery, tasteless store-bought stuff? Me too. Wary of the nitrates used to preserve it commercially? Ditto. But I'm not that keen on botulism either so I wondered - is there a way to make nice dry bacon without nitrates? The answer is: Yes, there is, but first, a bit of history. 041b061a72
