First Lady Michelle Obama €? Upscale{October 2011} [TOP]

President Barack Obama's dinner last night with the first lady and friends was similarly out of range for many Americans. The group dined at Alan Wong's Restaurant, an upscale eatery that specializes in Hawaiian Regional Cuisine and is a favorite of the first couple.

First Lady Michelle Obama – Upscale{October 2011}

Obama appeared on the cover and in a photo spread in the March 2009 issue of Vogue.[269][270] Every first lady since Lou Hoover (except Bess Truman) has been in Vogue,[269] but only Hillary Clinton had previously appeared on the cover.[271] Obama later appeared two more times on the cover of Vogue, while First Lady, the last time in December 2016, with photographs by Annie Leibovitz.[272] In August 2011, she became the first woman ever to appear on the cover of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, and the first person in 48 years.[273] In 2013, during the 85th Academy Awards, she became the first first lady to announce the winner of an Oscar (Best Picture which went to Argo).[274]

By the time the brand accompanied her into the pages of the March 2009 issue of Vogue magazine (she wore a pink Jason Wu sheath for what would be her first of three cover turns), J. Crew was ready to capitalize on the FLOTUS fashion fascination, posting a first-look photo from the shoot and advising customers that the cashmere V-neck cardigan, rumpled satin cami and tweed pencil skirt from the fall 2009 collection were available for preorder. When the Obamas made their first official trip to London in 2011, the cream-and-silver J. Crew cardigan, which the first lady paired with a mint-green version of the aforementioned pencil skirt, sold out just hours after photos were released.

Other than those, the first lady often scores items with discounted prices with the help of her personal assistant Meredith Koop. Koop, according to a 2011 Washington Post story, is vital "in arranging for purchases, including considering the best offered price and buying on discount if discounts are available."
